Brief History: Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, Spencer Reid was an unusual child right from the start. While his physical development was typical, his mental development was accelerated way beyond anything that could be considered normal. He was talking in full and complete sentences by six months, reading children's books by a year and a half, and by the time he started school, he was far beyond what was expected as the intellectual level of a five year old.
Promoted directly to the 3rd grade, Spencer was passed and skipped grades until he ended up as a high school senior at 12 years of age. In a Las Vegas public high school, this was a situation which brought him more than enough teasing as well as abuse. He had next to no friends in high school, and even fewer people who actually appreciated his presence. It wasn't much better when he started college at 13, but at least he only had to deal with the taunting in class, then. During his college years, he stayed at home with his mother, Diane, who had raised him on her own since he was seven after his father left the family, unable to deal with Diane's paranoid schizophrenia.
Far too aware of his mother's condition and worried that her avoidance of any sort of treatment would lead to her injuring herself or someone else, Reid had her committed to Bennington Sanitarium when he was eighteen years of age. He feels exceedingly guilty about action, still, and even more so about the fact that he is afraid to visit her, unable to face his fear that he might very well end up in the same position one day. This guilt promotes him to send her a letter everyday.
When he was twenty, Reid was recruited to the BAU by Aaron Hotchner on the recommendation of Jason Gideon, Reid's former boss, to serve as the team's statistical analysis expert (though, Morgan often refers to him as their "expert on everything"). Despite his rather quick integration into the team, many of the other members still think of him as 'the kid' even after he's been there for several years. It is only in the most recent years, after Gideon's departure from the BAU and Reid having to grow in himself and his own independence, have his co-workers actually started to take him more seriously. Of course, he's still like the dorky little brother for the team, but there is no doubt that it is in a good way.
